When shopping for the best oven for my needs, I narrowed my search down to the KitchenAid KEBC107 in stainless. I bought it at Pacific Sales (www.pacificsales.com) Please note: Only one manufacturer (Viking) makes a 30″ single GAS convection oven and it’s very expensive. I opted for a single oven, due to the fact that I really don’t do that much oven cooking. I used the remaining space in my oven cabinet for the microwave. This saved on counter space.
The most amazing feature about this oven is the convection conversion. Let’s say you have to cook something at 400 degrees for 25 minutes. For example; you input the 400 degrees at 25 minutes and it converts it to 325 degrees for 13 minutes. This is due to the T.H.E. - The Third Hidden Element. There is a fan in the rear of the cabinet that circulates the convection heat. This means food is cooked better, faster and with less energy. The oven is set to work in Fahrenheit but can easily be set to operate in Celsius. There is also a “Sabbath Mode” for the religious folk. This mode locks out use at a specific time and day.
This oven also broils and bakes in BOTH conventional and convection modes. There is also an option to use this oven fro dehydrating. All you need to do is purchase an oven door stop and dehydrating racks.
The controls can be a bit challenging for the technophobes and those who refuse to read the manual (hi, MOM!) Once you get the swing of it, the controls are a breeze and make sense.
As with any quality appliance, there is an option to lock the door (so kids can’t get hurt) and a control lock feature which won’t allow probing fingers to mess with your set cooking project or timing.
The two oven lights are more than sufficient to illuminate any cooking project. They come on when the door is opened or when the oven light switch is pushed.
My unit came with more than ample racks for baking…speaking of which, there is a hidden element under the floor of the oven. It’s called the Clean Bake element. MUCH easier to clean - even though this oven utilizes a self-cleaning mode.
There is also a temperature probe that plugs into the wall of the oven. The probe end is stuck into the turkey, chicken, etc. and tells the oven exactly what temperature the meat is. This results in even more precise cooking.
There are also scads of tones on this oven. There are tones for each button pushed, end-of-cycle tones, timer tones, reminder tones and tones for when the oven reaches the exact cooking temp (used in pre-heating). Yes, these tones can be muted or turned down low.
Another thing to consider is the cost involved for an electrician. Common household current is 110 volts - this oven (and many other hi-end appliances) require 220 volts.
The instruction manual is easy to follow and even comes with tips on cooking and positioning of racks while cooking. There is also a repetitive warning that is noteworthy: “WARNING FOOD POISONING HAZARD Do NOT let food sit in oven more than one hour before or after cooking. Doing so can result in food poisoning or sickness.” This is repeated THREE times in the manual - guess it’s something not to miss.
My recommendation: This oven is perfect for single folks and people who do NOT do that much baking/cooking. Larger families would be better off with a double oven.
This oven blends good looks and ease of use for a hi-tech and fast-paced world.
