We recently remodeled our kitchen (completed 2/02). This job required a complete overhaul of the existing kitchen. We hired a company to come up with plans and to do the work. Our job was to approve the plans, pick the cabinets, tiles, countertop, and select all new appliances. The selection of the appliances was the most difficult task for us out of everything (I guess besides coming up with the $35K LOL).
Cutting right to the chase, I felt that the biggest challenge in redesigning my kitchen was that we had to work within the space of the existing kitchen. We did not want to do an addition or knock down walls. I had to make major decisions about cabinet design BEFORE selecting the appliances and then go out to FIND appliances based on my decision. It was at this point that I decided that I was willing to sacrifice cabinet space for the luxury of a double wall oven. I always wanted a double wall oven and by george, I was going to get one! And the one I ended up getting was the fabulous GE Electric Double Wall Oven.
The GE Electric Double Wall Oven is my absolute favorite thing in my new kitchen. It not only acts as the focal point, but it is also centrally located within the kitchen so it really stands out. The compliments abound whenever anyone comes into my kitchen.
COLORS
The GE Electric Double Wall Oven comes in three colors, black on black, white on white, and bisque on bisque. Bisque (sometimes called bisquit) is a fancy name for beige but it really just depends on whether or not you are hungry (LOL). I frankly feel that the bisque color is dreadful. My GE Electric Double Wall Oven is black and it is GORGEOUS. The black really stands out and looks modern and sleek. And yes, I know I am talking about a double wall oven here and not a car, but trust me, you would love it too!
FEATURES
First, let me explain that there are actually two different lines of double wall ovens made by GE. There is the GE Profile series and the standard GE series, also known simply as GE Appliance. There is one major difference between these two lines and that is a little ole” thing called the CONVECTION feature (there could me more diffences but this one is the main one, in my opinion). I chose not to have this feature since I felt that I had no need for this ability. Convection ovens use a fan within the oven to help speed up cooking time by circulating the heat within the oven which also allows your oven to cook more evenly. I chose to save money and not get the Profile line. And money made a big difference here. The Convection feature will add roughly another thousand dollars onto the price of this appliance and I felt that it wasn”t worth it. My cookies and holiday turkeys cook just fine without it! LOL.
Another feature that adds to the cost of the oven is the self cleaning feature. You can get this feature on ONE or BOTH of the ovens in this series (GE Appliance). I chose the double self cleaning feature. I can’t imagine only getting the self clean feature on the top oven but again, this will save you money.
The GE Electric Double Wall Oven features electronic controls, called SmartSet Oven Controls. The oven is controlled by a series of push buttons in such a simplistic design. There are actually two separate sets of controls, clearly labeled TOP OVEN and BOTTOM OVEN. Each individual set of buttons consists of the following:
BAKE
OVEN LIGHT
DELAY
BROIL
START
COOK TIME
The SmartSet Oven Controls (the buttons are centrally located and/or used for either oven) are the:
KITCHEN TIMER
OVEN TEMP CONTROL
First you select which oven you are using by pressing the BAKE button for the top oven or the BAKE button for the bottom oven, then you press the OVEN TEMP CONTROL buttons (they are an arrow up button and an arrow down button) in the middle of the keypad. The KITCHEN TIMER is used the same way.
The GE Electric Double Wall Oven also has the TrueTemp system, trademarked to GE. According to GE”s website: “TrueTemp System “manages” oven temperatures to ensure accurate, consistent heating and total cooking performance.”
USING THE GE ELECTRIC DOUBLE WALL OVEN
When you first press the BAKE button, the default temperature setting is 350 degrees Farenheit. If this is what you need, you simply press the START button next. However, if you need a different temperature, you use the UP/DOWN OVEN TEMP CONTROL buttons to change the default setting. Once you have the desired temperature, you then press the START button. It”s that easy!
Once you press START, the GE Electric Double Wall Oven will signal you with a beep when it has reached the temperature you want. Nice! Additionally, when you set your oven temperature, you can watch the oven heat up by looking at the display. It displays the climbing temperature so you can put your food in when it is even CLOSE to the desired temperature if you want!
The GE Electric Double Wall Oven also has a delayed bake feature which allows you to have your oven start baking when you aren”t even home! I love this feature for my dishwasher but have yet to use it for my oven. It”s nice to know it”s there though!
There are two oven racks per oven with four rack positions inside both ovens. A broiler rack included as well. These racks slide out easily and are simple to adjust (unlike my old oven that you had to line up the racks in the grooves!)
The Self Clean feature also works like a dream. Everything is completely automated. You press the Self Clean button and VIOLA it goes to work. It is defaulted at 4 hours for the cleaning and the door automatically locks closed. No latching it yourself!
MY CHOICE
I purchased the 27″ oven model and when installed, it is flush against my cabinets so it is in essence, built in. The GE Electric Double Wall Oven also comes in 24″ size and a large 30″ size. And size matters! I graduated from a dinky 24″ oven to this size and it makes all the difference in the world! And if I had a larger kitchen, I would probably have upped myself to the 30″. Of course, the bigger the oven, the bigger the cost. I paid about $1300 for this oven- the black on black 27″ GE Electric Double Wall Oven with Self Cleaning on both ovens.
MY THOUGHTS
In a million years I”d never think that I”d love an oven but I do! I love this oven! It”s the best part of my kitchen in looks and in ease of use! I only use the bottom oven when I have company or for holidays but when I DO use it, I am so grateful for the choice I made in getting the GE Electric Double Wall Oven . I gave up a very large pantry for the sake of getting this oven and do not regret it. I make do with my smaller pantry, happily, because the double oven space ensures convenience as well as extra people over for the holidays! LOL! It is really nice to be able to have the turkey come out at the same time as the baked potatoes, the veggie bake, and the noodle casserole come out at the same time!
