My wife and I built a house in 1999 and with it came all new appliances. We did not go with any particular brand but seemed to end up with a Kenmore washer and dryer, dishwasher, microwave oven, cooking top, and refrigerator. Our oven was a Whirlpool.

This oven looks beautiful. I really like the design and the electronic display panel is easy to use. It has also come in handy when we have people over and need to use two ovens. With that being said, it is far and away the most troublesome appliance I have ever owned.

The problems started when I went to use the self-cleaning feature of the oven. I did the self-cleaning cycle and after it was over I could not open the doors. I then noticed that I did not have any power, either. I went and checked the circuit breaker and that was fine. I then called Sears and they came out and replaced the fuse. The fuse is in the back of the oven and extremely hard to get to if you need to replace it but I have heard there has been a design change since then and that the fuse is accessible from the front of the oven, but I do not have proof of that.

The repair guy then told us we needed a larger hole to vent the heat in the cabinet that sits below the oven. I cut a hole that was 12” in diameter like he recommended. I thought that was the end of it!

About six months later, and against my better judgment, I tried the self-cleaning feature again. Again the doors locked up and it blew out a fuse. Sears (the one great thing about all this) came out and replaced the fuse. However, this time the computer control panel blew out as well. The repair person had to order it so we were without use of the oven for a couple of weeks. Sears, out of the goodness of their heart, replaced this for free for us. I was told it was normally a $600.00 part.

The new repair guy also said that Whirlpool redesigned the blower to help vent heat and that they would replace this with the new design. Sears ended up replacing the fuse, the blower and the computer control panel at no charge. The oven worked well again for a while. Imagine, purchasing an oven because of the self-cleaning feature and then not being able to use it! It is extremely infuriating.

This past Sunday, January 16th, 2005, we had a group of friends, neighbors and their friends over to watch football. For maybe only the sixth time in it’s short life we had used the bottom oven in this double oven ensemble. We were making pizza, wings, snacks etc. Anyway, we were all standing around and watching the game and talking when we heard a shattering noise. No one was near the oven, no one had ever slammed that oven door, we were just using it for something as outrageous as cooking. We walked over to the oven and the heat-tempered glass inside the oven door had shattered. The sound we heard was the glass cracking and then falling into the space between the door.

I would not buy this appliance again if I had to. Four trips by Sears in the last four years is entirely too much.
