Possessed Oven - Thermador SC302T Electric Double Oven This oven is possessed. Not only have I had it worked on 3 times for the same problem but now it likes to turn it...

Lucky me, I got to renovate another kitchen! We just moved into a house with an original 1962 kitchen and we gutted it and replaced it with a state of the art 2004 kitchen (complete with 2004 prices and labor costs! LOL). Two short years ago, I renovated a kitchen in my previous house in order to sell it. We went low end on many things and midrange cost on the appliances, hence my review of my previous double oven (a sufficient GE http://www.epinions.com/content_75186933380).

This time around, I wanted to go high end on my appliances and create more of a dream kitchen; hence my review of the Thermador SC302T Electric Double Oven.

We purchased the Thermador SC302T Electric Double Oven in a sleek and modern black color. No mistake here as it is a cornerpiece in my kitchen. Black will never go out of style and it always looks new. We got a bargain on this oven as the store’s distributor changed and this was the last one from that distributor. We got it virtually at cost ($1575. vs. the standard $2400 or so). It was unopened and in perfect condition.

FEATURES

When purchasing a Thermador SC302T Electric Double Oven, you can choose to have convection cooking in one or both ovens. My double oven has convection in only the top oven. That is enough for me as I still don’t use this feature. I used it once while making bisquits and noticed nothing different. A better baker than myself would probably argue with me but I still feel that convection is a convenience that I could live without so I am not unhappy with it in only one of my ovens.

Each oven has a Bake feature and a Broil feature. The Thermador SC302T Electric Double Oven also comes with three oven racks PER OVEN (a total of 6). A broiler pan is also included. The oven racks have a safety stop feature which stops the rack from pulling all the way out of the oven. This is a great feature.

The Bake feature uses the top and bottom heating elements to warm the oven. Broil uses only the upper heating element when cooking.

The Thermador SC302T Electric Double Oven has a Convection function and a Convection Roast function. The difference between these two features is that convection mode uses only the heating element behind the baffle at the back of the oven and is circulated by the fan. Convection Roast combines using traditional convection mode with traditional bake mode (electric heating element at the bottom of the oven).

There is a Child Lockout feature for this double oven as well but it is a HIDDEN function! To initiate this function, you simultaneously hold down the COOK TIME and the STOP TIME buttons on the keypad (more about keypad use later). This is a great feature since curious intuitive children might recognize the words unlock and lock but will never figure this out.

These ovens have a Cook Time component and a Timer component for use during cooking. The difference between these two functions is that the Cook Time function shuts off the oven when the set amount of time is reached. The Timer function simply counts down a time and beeps when it is ended. I’ve used both of these functions and prefer the Timer function because sometimes you need just a little more cooking time and rather than have to reset the oven temp, you simply put the item back in at the same temperature.

There is an Oven Light feature allowing you to see in while baking. I am not fond of this feature on the Thermador SC302T Electric Double Oven since the one button controls both ovens. Either both oven lights are on or both oven lights are off. I think Thermador could have included a separate light for each oven.

The Thermador SC302T Electric Double Oven also has a Self Clean feature for both ovens. I don’t know how anyone lives without this as you get quite spoiled by it. When in use, the ovens automatically lock for the process.

Using Your Thermador SC302T Electric Double Oven

This oven is completely controlled electronically by a keypad at the top of the set of ovens. There is one location for the operation of both ovens. It is fairly intuitive to use.

There are four series of buttons at the top of the oven. The first set displays the buttons to set the timers and the lights. The second set is the numeric keypad. The third set controls the upper oven (labeled as so) and the fourth set of buttons controls the lower oven (also labeled).

To set the Bake, Convection, or Convection Roast temperatures, simply press the corresponding button once for the oven you want to use (for instance, the Bake button), then type in the degree setting you want on the numeric keypad (ie: 350) and press the corresponding button again (press Bake again).

Broil works a bit differently. Press the Broil button and then any number on the keypad to set the default high broil setting. If you’d like to set a lower broil temperature, you press Broil, then either press 500 for a medium setting or 450 for a lower setting.

To turn off either oven, simply press the OFF button for the oven you are turning off.

Likes and Dislikes

First and foremost I must say that this oven is beautiful to look at. It is a grand oven. However, looks are not everything. This is a loud oven. The fan that is generated during use is noisy. It isn’t simply a low hum. This is not a reason to avoid this oven though.

It seems that the Thermador SC302T Electric Double Oven takes a very long time to preheat. Once you set the temperature, the display indicates what temperature the oven is up to as it climbs to your selected temperature. For 350, it takes about 15 minutes. My previous oven was faster.

Along these lines, the Thermador SC302T Electric Double Oven takes what seems like forever to shut off. Once you press the OFF button, the fan stays on (noisy!) and the oven doesn’t shut off for a good hour later. Maybe more. Your oven will still be on long after your company leaves!

I do not see this oven performing any differently than my previous GE. Cooking is the same for me as I am not an expert in Convection cooking. That would be the biggest difference.

Lastly, these are 30” ovens. They are spacious with ample room for multiple pans. If you can find the room for these large ovens, then do it. It is worth it.

FINAL THOUGHTS

This oven is expensive and I am not sure it is worth a thousand dollars more than a lower end appliance. GE makes convection ovens as well for less money but they are not as pretty as these are. I have the Thermador cooktop (http://www.epinions.com/content_123469139588) so I wanted my appliances to match plus with the low price I paid, it made this a worthy choice. I have no regrets.

Lastly, the double Convection oven is even more money than this model. Consider getting convection in only one to save money, unless you are proficient in convection cooking.

Overall, this is a fantastic oven, albeit with a loud fan. Operation is simple and straightforward, and the safety feature is well hidden from my kids.
